METAL ENGRAVING

A FINE CRAFT

ORIGIN

Born in the 15th century and originating from the world of goldsmithing, engraving is a revolution in the world of images.

USE

Thanks to a plate engraved and pressed onto paper, it allows for the first time the reproduction of images with great precision.

TODAY

It gives way to a wonderful aesthetic and offers artistic and cultural value to the illustration.

PROCESS

SHORT VERSION !

STEP BY STEP

1/ DRAWING ON SITE

CRAFTING TIME : 8h

Each Mignonne begins with a pencil sketch drawn on site, in front of the location. The drawing is then finalized with a fine black felt-tip pen in the studio.

2/ COPPER ENGRAVING

The design is transferred onto a copper plate. An acid then etches the metal at varying times, creating distinct values that will determine the color intensity of the print. This technique is called ETCHING and AQUATINT.

CRAFTING TIME : 16h

3/ DOLL INK & PRINT

Several inks are applied simultaneously to the plate using small tarlatan pads. Since faithful reproduction is impossible, each print is a unique piece. The result is called a PRINT.

CRAFTING TIME: 30 minutes per print

4 / DRYING, EMBOSSING & NUMBERING

The print dries for several days under weight. It is then embossed "Les Mignonnes", signed and numbered out of 50 copies per shade.
